After his trip through Europe, Stieg Larsson did his military service as a platoon commander here, in what was then regiment I20. Erland Larsson recounts that his son was not at all happy at this time. Stieg helped with distributing Röd Soldat. The dissemination of this magazine contravened the prohibition against spreading propaganda while wearing a uniform.
It was most probably at this time that Stieg Larsson put the “e” in his Christian name. He did this to avoid confusion with another Stig Larsson, an author who is still active today. Besides the link of both being writers, they were both also born in Skellefteå and lived in Umeå at the same time. Commitment to left-wing political movements was a further trait that they had in common.
