Public Transport in Umeå
Onboard the bus
All buses have automatic stop announcements. Inside the buses, there are also displays showing the name of the next stop and the destination. On the outside, speakers announce the bus route number and destination. All city buses are equipped with ramps to make it easier for passengers with strollers or mobility aids to board and exit. Each bus has one designated space for a wheelchair and one for a stroller.
The Airport Bus
The airport bus also has automatic stop announcements, and screens inside the bus display the name of the next stop and the destination.
At the bus stop
Since the early 2000s, Umeå Municipality has been working to make all bus stops along the municipal road network accessible to everyone. Each year, several stops are upgraded to meet accessibility standards, ensuring that everyone can travel by public transport. The curb at each stop is 17 cm high to make boarding and exiting easier. The stops are equipped with guiding paths leading to the bus entrance. Stops with many passengers have shelters with benches. Walkways to and from the stops are reviewed to ensure smooth and safe access for all travelers.
Ferry
Parts of Umeå’s public transport network include archipelago ferries. The boats have gangways and are always staffed on the foredeck during boarding. It is easy to contact the crew if you need assistance when getting on board.

      Visiting Umeå City Centre
Here in Umeå, our ambition is that everyone should be able to take part fully in community life. Umeå Municipality works with clear goals to create a more accessible society — both for residents and for visitors. Over the years, many improvements have been made to increase accessibility along our streets, squares, and parks. In central Umeå, for example, there are guiding paths leading to certain attractions.
Umeå is a city in development, which means there is currently a lot of construction taking place around town. In some cases, this may affect accessibility in certain areas. If you are unsure about the accessibility of a specific place you plan to visit, we recommend contacting the venue directly for up-to-date information.
On Umeå Municipality’s website, you can find more general information about accessibility in Umeå and the measures being taken to improve the urban environment.
