Cross-Country Skiing around Umeå
In the Umeå region, you’ll find plenty of ski races for both casual skiers and elite athletes, taking place in central Umeå as well as in the surrounding municipalities. A race bib is always a great motivator to take your skiing to the next level. Find your next challenge here!
A 40 km race that serves as a seeding event for the Vasaloppet, and a 20 km race that qualifies for the Tjejvasan. Both start from Nydala Ski Stadium
With a focus on the joy of skiing, this is a women’s-only race and a seeding event for both the Tjejvasan and the Vasaloppet. Organized by TTGU, the race offers distances of 14, 28, or 42 km – and all participants are treated to a glass of bubbly at the finish line!
Västerbottens Skidveteraner invite you to the Umeåloppet. A 40 km race qualifies for the Vasaloppet, and a 20 km version serves as a seeding race for the Tjejvasan – all just a stone’s throw from central Umeå.
Sweden’s third longest ski race – and a true classic, first held in 1964! The race begins in Vindeln and finishes 74 km later in Robertsfors. Choose between four distances: 74 km, 40 km, 24 km, or 14 km – or join as part of a relay team. The race is a seeding event for the Vasaloppet.
The idea was born in 2014, as Almgren Stenberg was waxing her skis for the Vasaloppet.
"There must be a way to make ski wax without risking your frontal lobe – or the environment," she thought.
With roots in a ski-loving, entrepreneurial family, she decided to break new ground. After years of experimenting and test skiing, she launched Biovalla in 2023 – a biodegradable ski wax that delivers excellent glide without harmful chemicals.
From Tegsnäset to ski trails around the world – Vallakokerskan is out to change skiing, one eco-friendly wax at a time. In 2025, Erica was awarded the county winner’s prize by the SKAPA Foundation’s Innovation Award in memory of Alfred Nobel.

Lower your expectations! Skiing should be joyful, so listen to what your body needs today. It doesn’t matter if you ski 2 km or 10 – just go with the flow.
Forget the perfect wax! Blue, purple, yellow… wax can seriously mess with your head. Focus on having a solid base layer. The most important thing is to just get out there. If you’ve got time to spare, go ahead and add a layer suited to the day’s conditions.
Skiing with kids? Bring some motivational chocolate or juice boxes. It’s the simplest way to keep spirits high!
With a soft spot for the volunteer efforts that keep the region's ski culture alive, Erica shares two of her personal favorites:
Olles spår – best experienced in the dark with a headlamp or under a starry sky. The ultimate meditation, and a perfect way to wind down from a hectic day.
Tegsnäset offers many beautiful cross-country trails. One top tip: ski from Tegsnäset to Granö – and don’t miss the chance to recharge with some "Swedish fika" at Granö Gårdsbageri along the way.
