Since 1968, Umeå Jazz Festival has been a firm favourite among jazz lovers. Over four packed days, the city fills with jazz from Swedish and international artists, rising talents and established names. Over the years, legends such as Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis have taken to the festival’s stages. Football Dramatics is a high-energy, musical celebration of the world’s biggest sport, where the emotional intensity of a packed stadium meets iconic goals, graceful celebrations and physical performance. Some of Sweden’s leading physical performers make up the team – and the audience plays a central role in the action, just like in a decisive match. Football as you’ve never seen it before.

When the first riffs thunder through Umeå Folkets Hus, you know House of Metal is back. Fans gather for two days of uncompromising energy, powerful stage shows and metal at its most intense. Since its launch in 2007, the festival has grown into a major meeting place for metal fans in northern Sweden – and far beyond the region.

When the darkness is at its deepest, cinema screens light up across Umeå. Umeå European Film Festival invites audiences to six days dedicated to European cinema. Feature films, documentaries and shorts are combined with talks, encounters and other film-related experiences. A festival for devoted cinephiles as well as anyone who simply wants to settle into the darkness of the cinema and discover something new.

The night is bright, the rest is darkness. Or is it? Stephen Sondheim’s musical, based on Ingmar Bergman’s classic film, is a witty and romantic tale of love’s many twists and turns. Three generations come together in a production filled with misunderstandings, confessions and newfound passion. A musical finale to the cultural year – right in the heart of the northern Swedish winter.
