From world-class opera and gravity-defying circus to a legendary jazz festival, hard rock, film and musical theatre. Umeå’s cultural autumn brings together international names, exciting new discoveries and audience favourites. Here are nine experiences to brighten up the darker days.
This autumn, The Galloping Cure by Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek makes its Nordic premiere in Umeå – an opera about pain, desire and addiction. With a contemporary musical language and a story that moves between the absurd and the deeply human, this is an opera experience far beyond the ordinary. Following its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Festival, the production received glowing reviews – including a five-star rating from The Times.

Eight bodies, ten thousand hours of training and almost no limits to what is possible. When Australian Gravity & Other Myths comes to Umeå with Ten Thousand Hours, expect 60 minutes of raw power, precision and breathtaking acrobatics. With no props or elaborate stage design getting in the way, the performers and their connection take centre stage – throwing each other through the air, building spectacular formations and balancing on the edge of the impossible. An international guest performance by one of the world’s most acclaimed contemporary circus.

Two hands, one piano and music that seems to slow down time. With more than 800 million streams, Dutch pianist and composer Joep Beving is one of the world’s most listened-to contemporary piano artists. His stripped-back, melancholic music has found a global audience through its rare ability to create a sense of presence and stillness with the simplest of means. This autumn, he comes to Umeå with new material – for his only Swedish performance on the tour.

As autumn gets into full swing, Powerpose FM Festival takes over Umeå Folkets Hus and transforms the city into a hub for new music. Over two intense evenings, some of Sweden’s most exciting artists come together to showcase the future of Swedish music – on a stage far from the buzz of the big cities. For anyone looking to discover new favourites and experience something unique, this is a must.

Since 1968, Umeå Jazz Festival has been a firm favourite among jazz lovers. Over four packed days, the city fills with jazz from Swedish and international artists, rising talents and established names. Over the years, legends such as Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis have taken to the festival’s stages. Whether you’re a devoted jazz fan or simply curious, there are plenty of chances to find your rhythm.

What happens when football culture, circus, technology and magic meet on the same pitch? Football Dramatics is a high-energy, musical celebration of the world’s biggest sport, where the emotional intensity of a packed stadium meets iconic goals, graceful celebrations and physical performance. Some of Sweden’s leading physical performers make up the team – and the audience plays a central role in the action, just like in a decisive match. Football as you’ve never seen it before.

When the first riffs thunder through Umeå Folkets Hus, you know House of Metal is back. Fans gather for two days of uncompromising energy, powerful stage shows and metal at its most intense. Since its launch in 2007, the festival has grown into a major meeting place for metal fans in northern Sweden – and far beyond the region.

When the darkness is at its deepest, cinema screens light up across Umeå. Umeå European Film Festival invites audiences to six days dedicated to European cinema. Feature films, documentaries and shorts are combined with talks, encounters and other film-related experiences. A festival for devoted cinephiles as well as anyone who simply wants to settle into the darkness of the cinema and discover something new.

Dates: 24–29 November
The night is bright, the rest is darkness. Or is it? Stephen Sondheim’s musical, based on Ingmar Bergman’s classic film, is a witty and romantic tale of love’s many twists and turns. Three generations come together in a production filled with misunderstandings, confessions and newfound passion. A musical finale to the cultural year – right in the heart of the northern Swedish winter.
