DUÅ

A Umeå institution. Brothers Per and Lars Åkerlund are passionate champions of the city’s food scene, and their enthusiasm fills the shelves at DUÅ. Browse cheeses, charcuterie, northern Swedish specialities, olive oils and freshly roasted coffee. Come for dinner inspiration or a gift that won’t sit around gathering dust. Named Store of the Year in 2022 and Deli Counter of the Year in 2024, they have a few awards to back it up.

Gårdshem

At Gårdshem in the Utopia shopping centre, Swedish artisan food and drink take centre stage, with a particular fondness for the north. Discover cheeses from Svedjan near Skellefteå and coffee from Umeå’s own Costas roastery. A good stop if you enjoy knowing where your food comes from. Start with the cheese and see how much room is left in your bag.

Frukthörnan

The name means “the fruit corner”, but chocolate is a very good reason to visit. Frukthörnan has been part of Umeå’s shopping streets since 1918. In the 1990s, its then owners, the Sandström sisters, helped introduce the city to fine dark chocolate. That tradition continues today. Find something to give away, share or keep somewhere only you know about.

Local craftsmanship, textiles and a new leafy housemate. These shops are worth a closer look.

Hemslöjden

For something with a connection to Umeå, start at Skolgatan 49. Hemslöjden brings together work by local craftspeople and small Swedish producers. Browse ceramics, woodwork, textiles and jewellery, alongside traditional wooden drinking cups and birch-inspired gifts. Prefer making things yourself? There’s yarn and craft supplies for your next project, too.

Part of Umeå’s flower scene since 2015, Linné och Grankvist works with seasonal cut flowers, hand-tied bouquets and unusual houseplants. Vintage finds and designer plant pots complete the picture. Visit for a bouquet to take to dinner or a new plant to brighten your home.

Bric-a-brac

Stockholm, Lund and Umeå. Those are the cities where Swedish fashion label Bric-a-brac has its own shops. Its Umeå shop opened on Rådhusesplanaden in 2023. Discover the label’s womenswear and menswear collections, with natural fabrics, distinctive patterns and vintage influences, alongside selected accessories and design objects. A good stop for clothes you won’t see on every high street.

Bigaro

Bigaro has occupied one of the pedestrian shopping street’s old wooden buildings since 1990. Since 2016, Moa Gahlin, originally from Dorotea in inland Västerbotten, has been choosing what goes on the rails. The focus is on well-made, comfortable clothes with lasting appeal. Nollnitti

With roots in Umeå’s clothing scene going back to 1999, Nollnitti has had time to get to know the city and its wardrobes. Find a carefully selected range of menswear, with jeans hemmed in the shop. Because even if you like a turn-up, it should at least be your choice.

Burmans Musik

One of Umeå’s proudest institutions occupies just 35 square metres at Kungsgatan 56. Burmans Musik is Scandinavia’s oldest record shop and a small live music venue with plenty of history. Artists including INVSN, Sofia Jannok and Markus Krunegård have performed among the record racks. Visit for vinyl, new releases and a chat about music in a city that takes it seriously.

Sandbergs Pappershandel

At Kungsgatan 59, you’ll find a traditional stationery shop stocked with pens, notebooks, writing paper and plenty more for those who think best with a pen in hand. A stop for list-makers, letter-writers and anyone with firm opinions about what makes a good notebook.

Meretes Hälsobutik

Meretes has been at Renmarkstorget 10 since 1998. Merete chooses the range herself, bringing together skincare, haircare and body products with teas, treats and several brands from Umeå and the surrounding area. Look out for soaps from Malin i Ratan. A good place for a small gift with a local connection or something for your own bathroom shelf.
