Cold-water bathing in Umeå

Cold-water bathing has become increasingly popular, with many experiencing both physical and mental benefits from immersing themselves in icy waters. In addition to well-known advantages like improved circulation, a strengthened immune system, and a refreshing endorphin boost, cold-water bathing also promotes mindfulness, builds mental resilience, and fosters a sense of community. It’s this unique combination that is coming to life at a natural oasis in Umeå.

Umeå Kallbad - Cold Water, Warm Community

It all started with a vision: a year-round facility for cold-water bathing and sauna in the heart of Umeå. With the help of passionate enthusiasts and voluntary contributions, an old wagon was transformed into a sauna that now stands as a symbol of community at Bölesholmarna.

– Cold-water bathing is a physical, mental, and deeply personal experience. For me, it brings a strong sense of presence and calm, and afterward, I feel refreshed, energized, and happy. It’s a meditative moment—a way to disconnect from everything else and truly be in the moment. At the same time, you learn a lot about yourself. You challenge yourself physically by facing discomfort, but also mentally by understanding your own reactions. You realize you don’t need to act on an impulse but can observe it and choose how to respond, says Elvira Lundgren, an active member of Umeå Kallbad.

Every Sunday, over 100 enthusiasts gather for the traditional Söndagsdopp (Sunday Dip), an activity that has become a cornerstone of the community.

– Our vision is to give the people of Umeå the opportunity to swim in the river year-round and eventually build a floating facility with both sauna and ice bathing, says Dan Allen, one of the driving forces behind Umeå Kallbad.

Tips for a safe and enjoyable cold-water bathing experience

1. Preparation: Bring swimwear, a hat, water shoes/wool socks, a towel, warm clothing, and sturdy winter boots. It’s also helpful to have a mat to stand on while changing. Never cold-bathe alone—it’s both safer and more fun with company.
2. Safety: Ensure the ice is safe. Stay away from strong currents and thin ice.
3. During the Dip: Take it slow and focus on controlled breathing as you enter the water. For beginners, a quick dip is enough. Listen to your body and get out if you feel uncomfortable.
4. After the Dip: Change into dry, warm clothes quickly and drink something warm to recover. Let your body warm up gradually, and avoid taking a hot shower immediately after the bath.
