Roll, shape, pinch and build something that might become a mug – or something completely different. During the autumn break, Lera Mera invites children aged 6–13 and an accompanying adult to spend two hours getting creative with clay. No previous experience is needed, and afterwards each child can choose two creations and the adult one to be glazed and fired.

Stina leaves life in the countryside behind and moves to the big city, dreaming of something better. But things don’t quite turn out as she imagined. The autumn break performance Fångad (“Trapped”) is inspired by the Women’s History Museum exhibition Fångad – kvinnan bakom brottet and explores women’s lives, circumstances and paths into crime. The performance is suitable for children aged 8 and up. In swedish.

How does a symphony orchestra actually work? During the autumn break, children and adults alike can get closer to the music, the instruments and the people who bring it all to life. The Norrlandsoperan Symphony Orchestra performs familiar classics by composers including Vivaldi, Grieg and Haydn, while host Kristina Sturk guides the audience through the different sections of the orchestra. The concert is best suited for children aged 5–10.

When the October evening has gone dark, it’s time to light up Umeå. During Kulturskolan’s Light Parade, the city centre comes alive with light, colour, music and people making their way through the city together. Bring the family, dress warmly and join in.

Two evenings, two levels of scary. Halloween at Hamptjärnsstugan starts with a family-friendly evening for younger children – before things get considerably spookier the following night.
Spooky enough, suitably tricky – and with waffles close at hand. Follow the ghost trail, solve mysteries, get creative with Halloween crafts and try your luck at a haunted fishing pond. Dress for the weather – and costumes are very welcome.
29 October, 5.30–8.30 pm

As darkness falls, the forest around Hamptjärnsstugan becomes a much creepier place. Along the horror trail, expect unexpected encounters, strange noises and a few rather unpleasant surprises. This evening is not recommended for young children or easily frightened visitors. The café opens at 5.30 pm, followed by the trail half an hour later.

Cute rather than creepy is the theme when Avion Kids Club celebrates Halloween. Children can create their own Halloween mask to take home – or put it on straight away if it turns out spooky enough. The activity is free and suitable for children aged 3–12 accompanied by an adult.

Schubert, Telemann – and the occasional shiver. This Halloween, Umeå Baroque Ensemble invites you to an atmospheric concert of dramatic ghostly music at Helena Elisabeth Church in Gammlia. Kejko Ota, Janina Priebe and Iris Ridder perform on piano, harpsichord and violin, with vocals, in a concert that lets the old church become every bit as atmospheric as it deserves to be.

How do you actually make a photograph without using a camera? During the autumn break, Umeå konsthall invites 14–18-year-olds to a creative workshop where you can experiment with light-sensitive photographic paper, UV light and different materials. Try things out, get creative and see what images emerge.

Take your autumn break all the way into space. During Curiosum’s family evening, you can step inside the Wisdome Umeå dome, get to know the Moon a little better and follow Marcus Wandt on his journey to the International Space Station, ISS.
The planetarium show is suitable for the whole family and is offered twice during the evening.

Swap your usual autumn break hangout for beats and dance! At Klossen, you can try afrobeat with plenty of energy, rhythm and choreography. The workshop is suitable for both beginners and those with previous dance experience. Ages 13 and up.

For teenagers who already have a fairly close relationship with AI, whether they like it or not. At Bildmuseet, the exhibition AI and the Paradox of Agency explores how artificial intelligence affects our lives, our choices and who is really in control. A good stop for anyone interested in art, technology and questions that are not quite as easy to Google.
