1–2 Hours in Umeå

A couple of hours to spare? You can fit in more than you might think. Here are a few easy ways to make the most of your time.

➤ Follow the River to Bildmuseet

Take a walk along the Ume River to Umeå Arts Campus, home to the city's art, design and architecture schools. You'll also find Bildmuseet here, with seven floors of contemporary art, free admission and views across the river. Finish with coffee or lunch at  Bygden. City life, riverside views, university and culture, all in one walk. That's quite a lot of Umeå in just a few kilometres.

➤ Step Inside Väven Cultural Centre

Väven is an entire city block dedicated to culture, right in the heart of Umeå. It brings together the city library, exhibitions and the Museum of Women's History under one roof. The latter is no coincidence. Women's history, gender equality and movements for social change have long been part of Umeå's identity. Väven is also a particularly good option when the weather does what northern Swedish weather sometimes does.

➤  Discover the City Through Art

In Umeå, you don't have to visit a museum to find art. It's in the squares, on building walls and woven into everyday life. Follow our public art trail featuring 8 or 18 works and explore the city centre through artists such as Stig Lindberg, Knutte Wester and Camilla Akraka. Free, always accessible and very Umeå.

➤  Solve a Mystery in the City

Part city walk, part escape room, with considerably more competitive spirit than your average stroll. Read more about Molinders city mystery game ➜

2–3 Hours in Umeå

With a few hours to spare, there's time to venture beyond the city centre, dive into something you're curious about or let the kids decide what happens next.

➤ Discover Västerbotten at Gammlia

At Västerbottens Museum, you'll discover the stories behind the place you're visiting, from Sámi culture and regional history to photography, art and social movements. Continue outside to the Gammlia open-air museum, where historic buildings stand among birch trees and pines. A good place to understand a little more about how Umeå became the city it is today.

➤ Dive into Umeå's Rock History

One of the world's largest privately owned guitar collections is right here in Umeå. And once you know a little about the city's music history, it makes perfect sense.

Guitars – The Museum is located in the city centre and tells the story of guitars, amplifiers and music history. In a city where hardcore, punk, pop, jazz and indie have been taken seriously for decades, guitars have always had a special place.

➤ Take a Dip with Umeå's Cold-Water Swimming Community

Follow the river towards Bölesholmarna, around a 30–40-minute walk from the city centre. This is where Umeå Kallbad, a local non-profit cold-water swimming community, gathers for group dips. They've even built a sauna by the river.

Check when the next group swim takes place, or simply enjoy the walk, nature and river views. Getting into the water is entirely optional. Having an opinion about the temperature usually comes naturally.

Hungry?

Umeå has long had a restaurant scene that punches above its weight. Here you'll find northern Swedish ingredients, international flavours, people who take their coffee seriously and plenty of places where a spontaneous dinner is perfectly normal.

➤ Quick and Easy

Good food, central locations and no need to turn dinner into a major project. Grab a salad, soup or sandwich at ROST, go for Asian street food at SEN Street Kitchen or enjoy sushi at RåBra. Eat well, refuel and get back to exploring Umeå.

➤ Dinner with the Family

When everyone around the table wants something different, choosing a restaurant can become a sport of its own. Basta serves Italian food in the former Bank of Sweden building, Orangeriet combines dining with pétanque and games, and GP's is a reliable choice for burgers. Central, relaxed and with enough variety to keep different tastes happy.

➤ Dinner with the Team

Travelling with a big group? It's worth planning ahead and booking a table. O'Learys, Orangeriet, Allstar and GP's are some options for larger groups, with menus offering plenty of choice. If you'd like to make dinner a little more local, it's also worth checking which independent Umeå restaurants can accommodate groups. There's much more to the city's food scene than fast food between matches.

➤ When You Actually Have an Evening to Spare

Got an evening with nothing else on the schedule? Excellent. Köksbaren, Gotthards Krog, Hunger och Törst and Lilla Krogen offer four different ways to explore Umeå's restaurant scene. Here, local and northern Swedish ingredients often meet ideas and flavours from much further afield. A bit like Umeå itself.

➤ Coffee and Fika, of Course

Umeå takes its coffee seriously. Go classic at Nya Konditoriet, which has been serving customers on Kungsgatan since the 1920s. Explore locally roasted coffee at Costas, or head to Kulturbageriet for freshly baked bread and pastries. At Bokcafé Pilgatan, you can also get a taste of Umeå's literary side, with books, coffee and plenty to browse. The books aren't included in the price of your coffee, though.
